Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGSOM) in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine is an integrated academic medical center with Johns Hopkins values: excellence, discovery and innovation in medical education, research and patient care. The University encompasses a graduate school of medicine, a teaching hospital and a research enterprise.

PUGSOM (www.perdanauniversity.edu.my/pugsom) offers:

  • A collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a global leader in medical education, research and patient care
  • A post-baccalaureate medical school that includes a fully integrated teaching hospital and basic and clinical science research enterprise
  • A graduate medical education after the American model
  • A curriculum based upon Genes to Society, an innovative approach to medical education researched, developed, streamlined and used by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Student-centered medical education with outstanding permanent faculty, as well as visiting faculty from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
  • A commitment to innovative multidisciplinary research
  • An institutional governance that aims to develop physicians, scientists, and administrator for academic leadership

The mission of PUGSOM is to prepare physicians to practice compassionate clinical medicine of the highest standard and to identify and solve fundamental questions in the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of disease, in health care delivery and in the basic sciences. The innovative curriculum aims to produce leaders in medicine who will take the foundation of a broad education in the field to improve health, with a focus on South East Asia, through patient care, research and education. More broadly, PUGSOM aspires to raise worldwide awareness of Malaysian scholarship and leadership development. It is in this context that we view the Otak-Otak internship as an important component of our developing a pipeline of outstanding students interested in academic medicine and institutional leadership.

PUGSOM is offering two placements for internships through Otak-Otak. Our internship program allows an opportunity for pioneering students to participate in the development of a new model of medical education and academic research in Malaysia. We encourage innovative ‘outside-of-the-box’ approaches to the problems facing 21st century medical education, health care delivery and research. We are particularly interested in creative forward thinking students to apply a novel, multiple disciplinary approach to address these problems. The environment at PUGSOM is highly collaborative and collegial. We expect that summer interns will have opportunities to interact with a broad group of PUGSOM faculty and students, and will participate in the broad range of academic activities including seminars, workshops, and symposia.

Internship Opportunities
1. Bioinformatics Research Intern
Work with an interdisciplinary team of investigators to assist in the development of an open-source infectious disease database system, designed using a core framework intended to integrate disease surveillance, clinical management, and clinical research. The student will work on all aspects of the prototype development with Dr. Asif Khan, the project director. This work may include: conducting needs assessment to aid in specification of a core framework that can be applied across diverse health care venues, ranging from tertiary care centers to community health posts; participating in the design specification and development of the database system and the cross-platform mobile application that will interface the system; visiting participating clinics/hospitals for data collection using the mobile application and providing feedback for improvement of the prototype. Students with computer programming expertise will assist in component development of the core framework, database system and the mobile application, which may include identification of best methods for encryption to ensure patient confidentiality and optimizing data storage methodologies. Students with expertise in economics and business administration would be encouraged to work with the investigators to develop a business model to capitalize on the systems development and the data output.

2. Admissions Visual Arts and Marketing Intern
Work with the Dean, faculty, students, and Admissions staff to develop a set of marketing videos for PUGSOM. PUGSOM is the first graduate entry (US style) medical school in Malaysia and is a collaboration with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. One of our hurdles is increasing the Malaysian awareness of the US educational system of undergraduate/graduate education. We are seeking applicants to PUGSOM who mirror our pioneer class of 24 students who come from diverse backgrounds and have an average age of 24 years. Additionally, PUGSOM is developing an academic presence with the tripartite (patient care, research, education) mission exemplified by Johns Hopkins. PUGSOM is looking for a student with creative innovative abilities to develop a series of marketing videos that can be posted on our social network sites and used for presentation purposes. In addition to this project, the enterprising intern will have the opportunity to work with the Admissions staff to develop useful experience extending from application through admission. The student will also have the opportunity to attend symposia, workshops, and seminars depending on their interest.
